A Celebration of Murder takes place in Lenox, Massachusetts, a town long regarded by New York society as the intellectual and cultural counterpart of Newport, Rhode Island. From the mid-19th century and into the Progressive Era, Lenox came alive during the summer season with social engagements, outdoor adventures, parties, discussions — and plenty of scheming and gossip. An easy train ride away for families listed on “the 400,” the wealthy with Lenox “cottages” included the Carnegies, Astors, Morgans, Westinghouses, and Whitneys. These wealthy industrialists and their families typically remained in town from June until the annual Tub Parade in early September.
