Synopsis
In the summer of 1919, Petra Wood’s world is upended by scandal. Rumors of her late father’s wartime crimes strip her of her prominent position in the suffrage movement. Determined to clear his name and reclaim her standing, Petra ventures into the wealthy enclave of the Berkshire mountains to recover a stolen notebook. Her quest takes a dark turn when she stumbles upon the body of one of the thieves.
Thrust into a murder investigation, Petra must navigate the treacherous waters of high society. She encounters tight-lipped suspects, a local police force wary of outsiders, and a handsome veterinarian whose animal magnetism is hard to resist. As she pieces together the puzzle, Petra finds unexpected allies in the dying industrialist Andrew Carnegie and the reclusive novelist Edith Wharton. Yet, it is her clashes with Poppy Van Cleef, Hollywood’s exiled Queen of Beauty Queens, that promise to reveal the answers she desperately seeks.
As the body count rises, Petra is ensnared in a sinister cross-Atlantic web of intrigue. To survive until election day, she must outwit a cunning adversary who will stop at nothing to win. Will Petra uncover the truth in time to restore her father’s honor and her own, or will she become the next victim in this deadly game?
